April 02--PETERSBURG -- The Learning and Integrating New Knowledge and Skills Center (LINKS) Inc. held their second annual Mental Health and the Black Church community wellness conference on Saturday at the McNair-Trueheart VFW Post 622 in Petersburg.

Many church members attended the community wellness event this year, which provided an introductory training on trauma and resilience. Attendees learned about trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), trauma's impact on the brain and development, trauma's impact on at-risk health behaviors, and strategies for building individual and community resilience.

Guest speakers included Denise Purgold, a licensed clinical social worker and adoption therapist with the Adoptive Family Preservation Program at UMFS (United Methodist Family Services) in Richmond; Cordell Farley Sr., a motivational speaker and educational consultant; Rev. R. Lee Banks Jr., who is affiliated with several churches in Pennsylvania; and Jamie Reavis, a Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS), trainer and supervisor.
