Grout annual gala to take place at Iowa Veterans Museum

Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier - 4/11/2017

April 11--WATERLOO -- The Grout Museum District's annual fundraising event has come home.

"An Evening at the Museum" will take place at the Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum on April 29. In previous years, the event has taken place at venues outside the museum district.

"It's a great facility, and it's good for us to take advantage of the beautiful setting we have," said Sara Nefzger, the museum's development coordinator. "It gives us an opportunity to let our guests take a behind-the-scenes tour of our collection. I think people will be surprised at the range of objects we have in our collection, some of them rarely brought out for exhibit."

The Iowa Veterans Museum tells stories through traditional and interactive exhibits and activities of Iowa veterans from the Civil War to present. There are more than 35 interactive exhibits, an electronic Wall of Honor and a collection of veterans interviews in the "Voices of Iowa Oral History Project."

The event is from 6 to 9 p.m. Multiple buffet stations will be set up in the mess hall, featuring heavy hors d'oeuvres from Byran's on 4th, Catering by Dee and Wishbone, as well as a cash bar. Silent auction items will be set up in the lobby, and a raffle for a TV and cork pull are planned.

A scavenger hunt will have guests roaming the exhibits on the trail for clues.

One of the evening's highlights will be presentation of the Sullivan Brothers Outstanding Military Family Award, which honors military families with three or more members who have demonstrated exemplary community service, and have sacrificed to uphold the home and family through -- and in support of -- their loved one's service to our country, Nefzger says.

Tickets for the event are $35; attire is business casual. To purchase tickets call 234-6457 or go to www.gmdistrict.org/2017Gala.

Event proceeds will benefit the Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum.
