Walk a Mile for a Veteran Saturday

Walla Walla Union-Bulletin - 4/22/2017

April 21--Putting its best feet forward, the Walla Walla Community College-sponsored Walk a Mile for a Veteran will be from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, starting in the WWCC softball field parking lot, 500 Tausick Way, abutting Mill Creek.

A free barbecue and silent auction are featured elements, along with opportunities to visit with representatives from local veterans service organizations.

Funds raised from the event go into the Stanley A. Neal Veterans Scholarship Fund. Its proceeds assist veterans with little to no benefits who are currently attending WWCC.

"In the past this scholarship has assisted homeless veterans attending Walla Walla Community College gain access to housing, paid living expenses, tuition and school-related costs," said Gwendolyn Dentinger, WISE grant program manager, in a release.

The scholarship is named for Dayton native and World War II veteran Stanley A. Neal, who owned and operated a mechanic shop and gas station there. When families were going through tough times, Stanley undercharged for repairs or provided services free of charge.

Like many veterans, after his service Stanley returned home and continued to serve his community and upheld his high military and family values.

Etcetera appears in daily and Sunday editions. Annie Charnley Eveland can be reached at annieeveland@wwub.com or afternoons at 526-8313.
