Local veterans form AMVETS post in Englewood

Charlotte Sun - 6/25/2017

ENGLEWOOD — A cadre of military veterans in Englewood and Rotonda West are responding to a need for a local organization for all veterans who have served, and not just during wartime or hostile action.

The result is AMVETS Post 777.

In one month since its founding, new officers have been elected and installed and its ranks expanded to include 30 new members. AMVETS is an acronym for American Veterans.

In a ceremony at The Hills Golf & Country Club on June 19, 10 officers were installed by Terry Corson, AMVETS Department of Florida Commander. Also on hand was Rich Beaulien, AMVETS Department of Florida Sons Coordinator.

AMVETS was created in 1944 during World War II and now has 250,000 members nationwide.

Post 777 has filed all required paperwork and expects to receive its charter within a month.

Richard Young was installed as the post commander. He is a six-year veteran of the 82nd Airborne stationed at Fort Bragg and deployed to Germany for a year and a half.

Andy Hackleman is first vice commander and membership chairman. Interested veterans should call him at 941-830-5082, or email him at a.hackleman@yahoo.com. Annual dues are $35. A lifetime membership is $250.

All AMVET members and prospective members in the area will be honored by Englewoods on Dearborn, 362 W. Dearborn St., starting at 3 p.m.July 4.
