Fundraiser

West Stanly Senior Center has a community day at Emricci Pizzeria on the first Tuesday of every month. On this day Emricci donates 10 percent of all sales to the senior center.

Emricci is at 1814 Main St. W. in Locust and is open from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Stop by on the first Tuesday of every month, eat in or take out, and help the West Stanly Senior Center provide a place for the seniors of the western part of Stanly County to meet for activities.

Project Linus

A Quilt Day is at the West Stanly Senior Center the first Friday of every month. This group is part of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Chapter of Project Linus. The next Quilting Day is 10 a.m.-3 p.m.Aug. 4. Bring your portable sewing machine and a bag lunch and become a blanketeer for a worthy cause. If you can sew a straight seam you know enough to help out. We provide the materials from donations. If you have always wanted to learn how to piece a quilt we can show you.

Project Linus blankets are given to traumatized children between birth and 18 years of age. Some of the organizations in Stanly County that receive this chapter's blankets are: CHS Stanly, Esther House, Pregnancy Resource Center, Butterfly House and the Department of Social Services.

If you are unable to attend but would like to contribute new handmade blankets either quilts, fleece, knitted or crocheted there is a drop off box at the West Stanly Senior Center.

Donations of fabric may also be dropped off at the West Stanly Senior Center.

Locust Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary

Collecting Clothing

"There are words in the dictionary that have meanings that just should not be," says Locust VFW Post 6365 Auxiliary President Bev Staples. "Homeless is one of those words."

When those homeless are veterans, it is even more heartbreaking. Sadly, many of those who put their lives on the line for this country find themselves not able to keep a roof over their heads. Even worse, they can't even keep good clothes on their backs.

Because of this need, the Barber-Turner Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Locust is hosting a clothing drive.

You can help by donating gently used clothing for all seasons at the many drop points in Locust and Stanly County.

Clothing for men, women and children can be donated. In addition to clothing, flip-flops can also be given.

All collected items will be delivered to the Rowan Helping Ministry for distribution.

"We are still reaching out to other local business and organizations to be collection points, so keep your eyes open," Staples added.

If you don't have any clothing to donate, the VFW Auxiliary is always in need of funds to assist local veterans and their families including Adopt-A-Vet and providing gift bags for shut-ins. Contact the VFW Auxiliary on Facebook at: http://fb.me/VFW6365Aux.

Current Clothing & Flip-Flop Collection donation boxes will be at the following location until Aug. 5:
