Colquitt County native publishes novel about search for missing pilot

Moultrie Observer - 1/30/2018

Jan. 29--BLAIRSVILLE, Ga. -- A Colquitt County native now living in Blairsville, Ga., has published his first book.

Michael Shane Womack's book "Full Circle Purpose and Direction Full Circle" is a story about a group of friends, combat veterans, who are feeling the effect of transitioning to civilian life and assuming normal jobs. They feel that they have no purpose or direction until they hear a story from an old Marine fighter pilot about his best friend, shot down in the Pacific during World War II and missing in action.

The group hatches a plan to find the crash site. Using research and technology, they put their boring lives on hold and begin their expedition in Hawaii, sailing to the Solomon Islands on a 53-foot sailboat.

As the present day expedition unfolds in one chapter, the story of the missing Marine pilot is told in another. The seven-decades old story finally comes Full Circle with the grit and determination of fellow veterans on a mission.

Womack is a former Fleet Marine Force corpsman and combat veteran of the Persian Gulf War. A 1989 graduate of Colquitt County High School, he entered military service and attended the Naval School of Health Sciences in San Diego and Field Medical Service School at Camp Pendleton, Calif., before serving with various infantry and artillery units.

Some of his military awards include the Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Citation, Fleet Marine Force Ribbon, South West Asia Service Ribbon with Fleet Marine Force Combat Operations insignia and two bronze campaign stars, Kuwait Liberation Medal and various other ribbons.

After active duty, Womack graduated with a bachelor's degree from Brewton-Parker College while working full time and raising a family. He went on to receive his Master's of Education and Education Specialist degrees in Education Leadership, Administration and Supervision from Albany State University.

Womack taught Georgia studies for several years at C.A. Gray Jr. High in Colquitt County before moving to Blairsville and serving as assistant principal at Union County Middle School. He presently resides in Blairsville with his wife of 26 years, Janene Womack.
