Hope Mills board to discuss guidelines for selling town property

Nov. 05--HOPE MILLS -- An ordinance that would set guidelines for the sale or long-term lease of town property will be discussed when the Board of Commissioners meets at 7 p.m. Monday.

Commissioner Meg Larson requested the discussion. Larson favors an ordinance that would require all members of the board be present when the sale or long-term lease of town property is discussed. "Long-term" is defined as more than a year.

Larson brought up the proposal at a meeting last month, but it did not pass by the required "super majority," or four of five commissioners. She requested that the matter be placed on Monday's agenda.

Commissioners have been wrestling with an offer by the Lone Survivor Foundation, which assists military soldiers, veterans and families dealing with post-traumatic stress and other issues, to buy land and build a facility near the now-empty Hope Mills Lake No. 2. The board denied the request amid controversy over how the issue was brought to the board.

The proposed ordinance says that the board "shall not discuss or consider the sale or long-term lease of any real property owned by the Town of Hope Mills unless the full Board of Commissioners is present for the discussion."

Also on the agenda, the board is scheduled to consider airing its meetings on Fayetteville-Cumberland County Educational Television.

The meeting will be at Town Hall, 5770 Rockfish Road.
