The Darwin Reader is a digital talking book player program designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This application (or app) enables a cell phone or tablet computer running the Android operating system to function as a voice output electronic book reader for full-text, full-audio, and combined books and other print media in the standard DAISY 2.02 and 3.0 formats. Darwin Reader has a voice input search feature, and the user can download books directly into their device with Benetech BookShare library and LibriVox, or transfer DAISY books from their computer. Two modes of operation are available during playback. In the “Eyes-Free” mode, the user swipes their finger across the screen to move between sentences and sections. In the graphical mode, the user navigates by tapping the stylized graphics on the screen. The user can jump to a specific chapter, book section, page, paragraph, sentence, or word. The app also allows the user to change the font and background color, text size, font spacing, voice speed, and punctuation speech. Text is highlighted in a large, colored font as the book is read to the user. COMPATIBILITY: For use with a phone or tablet running the Android operating system. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Android 2.1 or later.
