Gov. Brad Little to speak at Memorial Day ceremony at Boise veterans cemetery on Monday

Idaho Statesman - 5/26/2022

The Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise is hosting a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday to honor military members who died while serving and those who are still serving in the Armed Forces.

The hour-long ceremony, hosted by the Idaho Division of Veterans Services, starts at 10 a.m. and will include a flyover from the Idaho Air National Guard, a Black Hawk helicopter and its crew, and a speech from Idaho Gov. Brad Little.

It’s the first time the Division of Veterans Services has hosted a Memorial Day service since 2019. The Idaho State Veterans Cemetery is at 10100 Horseshoe Bend Rd.

“Over the past two years, our nation’s endured the difficulties and hardships of a global pandemic,” James Earp, bureau chief for the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, told the Idaho Statesman. “But Memorial Day is a day of solemn reflection to pay respects to those that made the ultimate sacrifice, defense of our nation and those oppressed around the world.”

This year’s ceremony will see each gravesite in the 76.5-acre cemetery decorated with a U.S. flag on Saturday morning through Monday, and the cemetery’s Avenue of Flags will be raised throughout the weekend.

Along with a speech from Little, there will also be speeches from Colonel David Stamps from Mountain Home Air Force Base and retired U.S. Army Special Forces Officer Dan Nelson.

“We will also have displays of a cannon salute, rifle salute, a rendering of Taps, and a bagpipe lament performed by the Boise Highlanders,” Earp said.

Public parking for the event will begin at 8:45 a.m. Visitors will park at the Optimist Youth Sports Complex, where buses will shuttle people to and from the cemetery.

“We do encourage everybody to come out and take the time to pause for reflection to honor the service and sacrifice for our veterans,” Earp said. “And those who continue to serve at this time.”
